Do Affordable Health Insurance Plans for Small Business in Minnesota Exist?

Small businesses in Minnesota are wondering what they will do to be able to continue to offer health insurance plans to their employees. It is difficult for small businesses to find affordable group health insurance because they just don’t have the large number of employees it takes to get good rates from the group health care insurance providers. Many small businesses have been forced to cease their offering of health care plans in Minnesota.

Another problem that the lack of health care plans for small businesses in Minnesota is causing is that it is becoming increasingly more difficult for small businesses to hire and retain good employees. Employees want health insurance and are less willing to sign on to a business that is not able to offer it.

There seemed to be hope for small businesses who want to carry health insurance plans for their Minnesota employees. Back in 2006 Minnesota began to allow group health insurance carriers to offer health care purchasing alliances to small businesses. What this means is that several small businesses could join together and buy into one large group health insurance plan for their employees.

This seemed like a great opportunity for small businesses in Minnesota to offer health insurance plans to their employees and many of the small business owners excitedly looked into it. Unfortunately for most of the health care purchasing alliances, not enough small businesses signed up for the insurance pools and the providers were unable to offer the lower rates that they had hoped to.

Some small business owners found that it was actually less expensive to get on the internet and get quotes from the health insurance leads for private insurance or small business health insurance carriers. However, even the less expensive health insurance plans for small businesses in Minnesota are too expensive for many small business owners to carry, unless they force their employees to foot most or all of the bill for the premiums.

Some Minnesota small business owners are refusing to let go of their health insurance plans for their employees. They know how much of a benefit it is for them to offer it as well as for their employees. Their alternative is to pay the employees less money on the hour in order to afford it. These small business owners must be very strategic in the initial interview process with their potential employees. They need to let the prospects know that the insurance package is part of their salaries. Some people understand this, but many do not and turn down jobs with lower pay rates, even when they do offer health insurance plans. This is a hardship on employers.

Other small businesses in Minnesota have begun to offer health insurance plans in lieu of a higher pay rate. In other words, an employee can choose lower pay with a health insurance plan or a higher pay rate with no health insurance plan. Many people take the offer and look up health insurance leads online to compare the cost of obtaining private health insurance to the employers offer. After checking out the free leads, they tend to accept the lower pay with the health insurance package. Other employees don’t need health insurance because they already have it through their spouse’s employers, and so they opt for the higher pay with no insurance.

Small business owners are finding the need to be creative in order to offer health insurance plans in Minnesota. As great as the health care alliance program seemed when it started, it just never seemed to take off. Some of the providers of the small business health insurance pools are backing out of the health care alliance business altogether and plan to shut it down. This will leave the small business owners looking for new health care plans for their employees.

There has to be some medium through which health insurance plans for small businesses in Minnesota can be affordable for the small business owners. Perhaps the small business owners will be forced to utilize the free health insurance leads on the internet for themselves. Apparently lawmakers are looking into ways for providers to offer affordable health insurance plans for small business in Minnesota, but until then what else are business owners to do?

It's a shame health insurance is so darn expensive. We need to have a remedy since one major illness and accident could lead to the poor house for the uninsured. Thanks for exploring this.
