Beagles are a happy breed of small dog. Part of the hound group, Beagles are used as hunters as well as family companions. They enjoy fame through Snoopy, the beagle in the Peanuts comic strip, and are used by a number of countries, including the United States, as detection dogs to find contraband items in luggage.
What He’s Like
The Beagle is a cheerful little dog, gentle and playful. They are not timid nor are they overly aggressive. This small dog enjoys games and is a loyal family dog. Beagles love to be members of a pack, so the bigger the family, the happier the dog is. Beagles love company and sometimes they can develop separation anxiety if left alone too often. They are wary of strangers but can easily be won over, making them bad guard dogs. However, they are perfect watchdogs because they will bark and bay at anything unusual.
Apperance and Grooming
Beagles are small dogs, normally weighing between 18 and 35 pounds. They are often tricolor, with mixes of black, brown, and white. Beagles can be any hound color however. They have medium length fur, strong bodies, floppy ears, and a sweet face that is the epitome of the classic hound-pleading look. Beagles usually have hazel or brown eyes and a tail they hold upright whenever they are active.
Beagles are easy to groom. This small dog just needs brushing with a firm bristle brush and a bath when needed. Keep the nails trimmed and check the ears for signs of infection; dogs with floppy ears are more prone to ear infections.

Beagles With Kids
Beagles are excellent with children. They are perfectly happy to play all day long and accompany children all over the yard. They are very gentle, and are not prone to biting even if poked and harassed. Since they are sturdy for a small dog, they can rough house with older children and many love to play ball.
Trainability and Energy
Beagles have a mind of their own and an owner must become and maintain their position as pack leader. Beagles are intelligent but stubborn and can be single-minded; this can make them hard to train. Their sense of smell is incredibly good and they can easily become distracted. So it is not often that this small dog is seen in obedience trials. They also are easily bored. They respond well to food rewards and to consistent, patient training.
The Beagle is a high-energy dog. They are not very suited to apartment life unless they get frequent outdoor outings. They have a great deal of built-in stamina and once they find an interesting scent, they can travel for miles before tiring. Beagles are difficult to call back if they catch a new scent, and many find themselves lost. They need lots of exercise when young, though it doesn’t have to be intense – a good walk on a lead or retrieving a ball in a fenced yard will keep most beagles happy, fit and trim.

History of the Beagle
Beagle-like dogs can be traced back to 200 A.D. They were originally used as hunting dogs to hunt rabbits and other small game. Today’s beagles were developed around 1830 in England and brought to the U.S. around 1840. They were brought for hunting and the small dog was accepted by the A.K.C. in 1870. The beagle has since become popular in a variety of ways, and is a well-loved breed.

to halford: don't leave them alone too long! they get lonely and will chew anything! I leave mine in a crate (kennel) once and she ended up chewing it apart! Consider yourself warned!

Beagles are a lot of work. what breeders don't tell you is that they are prone to seizures. they howl at everything. they also only bond with one human in the family. they dig and are spiteful if left to long they will pee and crap tare things apart. so owning one is a huge responsibility. just make sure you do your research first before buying one. i have had many neighbors have them and then have to give them away because they couldn't handle them. think before you buy!

First you should never buy, you should always adopt =) Second each dog is different so while some may howl others may not. I have 3 dogs, all of the same breed, and each one has its own personality and quirks. The most important thing is learning your dog's personality and quirks, then train them to understand how to behave. Training, love and the right fit for both dog and family is the key to it all.
