Many newer parents tend to struggle with exactly how to begin potty training. This question can be daunting, as these parents don’t realize that they must be looking for potty training signs- that is, signs that your child is ready to begin potty training.

As a New Parent…

Keep in mind that each child decides on his/her own whether s/he is ready to begin to process. Potty training readiness usually begins with assessing your child’s age. Some research shows that 12-24 months is a good time frame, and other research suggests that it could take up to 48 months. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that potty training should normally occur between 12-48 months.

What Time Is The Right Time To Start Potty Training?

Knowing when to start potty training boys and knowing when to start potty training girls can be two very different tasks. In general, boys will potty train later in life. When potty training a boy, you will want to start by having him sit down while he goes pee in the toilet. This way, he can focus on the correct behavior without having to worry about the mechanics of standing up while peeing. Because boys need to learn to stand up while peeing, as well as successfully learn target practice, it can take significantly longer to train them. Therefore, when to start potty training boys is usually about the same time as when to start potty training girls- it will simply be a longer process for boys.

Where Do Siblings Come In On Potty Training?

Oftentimes, children with older siblings will potty train at a fast rate. This is because youngsters want to begin using the toilet like their older siblings. Therefore, it is important to utilize older siblings and portray them as models for your younger children to mimic. Oftentimes, this makes potty training significantly easier for younger siblings.

Another addition amongst popular potty training signs is when your child begins to feel uncomfortable wearing a diaper. As a result of not wanting to run around and play in a soil diaper, s/he might start asking you for a diaper change. When this begins, your child is definitely ready to begin the potty training process. Potty training readiness is relatively easy to assess, parents must simply be sure to keep their eyes peeled for the warning signs. Your child will definitely tell you when s/he is ready. Knowing when to begin potty training is equally as important as knowing how to begin potty training.
