Where To Hide During A Tornado When You Don't Have A Basement

Many people understand the importance of a basement when they need to hide during a tornado, but not nearly as many people understand what to do if they don't have a basement during storm season. The good news is with a little preparation a person can protect themselves in any environment during a storm. Some basic knowledge will go a long way to help a person hide during a tornado no matter where they are at.

If You Are In A Home And You Don't Have A Basement

The bathroom tub is a great place to start. Bathrooms are usually in the interior, and the ceramic tub goes a long way to helping a person hide during a tornado and offers protection when they don't have a basement. Cover yourself up with pillows, blankets, towels or whatever is nearby and soft enough to offer protection without harm.

If you're in a place where they don't have a basement and you need to hide during a tornado then choose interior supporting walls. If it's a public place then try to pay attention to what signs they have offering storm safety for that building. This way you'll be prepared if a storm hits.

If You're Driving And Need To Hide During A Tornado

It's rather obvious if you're in the car that you don't have the quintessential place for protection from a tornado; you don't have a basement. So now what? First and most important, if you see a funnel cloud do not try to race or out run it. This is one of the most dangerous things you can do. In this situation it is best to simply park the car, get as far away from it as possible while still being able to hide during a tornado in a low lying area, preferably a ditch. If there is anything in the vehicle to cover yourself with that is soft and protective do so.

If You Live In A Mobile Home And Don't Have A Basement But Need To Hide During A Tornado

Because mobile homes don't have a basement they are among the most dangerous places to attempt to hide during a tornado. Most parks do have a storm shelter for such weather and this can offer a fantastic safe area to those who don't have a basement. Know where these are and don't be afraid to use them, they are there for your safety.
